Kwinana Powerstation Boiler goes Boom.

The Kwinana power station says goodbye to its final boiler in quite the extravagant display.

On the 7th of June the Kwinana Powerstation destroyed its last boiler in a planned explosion. This came to fruition as part of a multi year project to decommission coal fired facilities.

The site was operational between the years of 1970 to 2015 where it was shut down. These demolitions have only been going since 2024. This is the same site where Synergy’s new Battery energy storage system is located, storing up to 800 megawatt hours of power and built in just a 2 year period.

This battery along with another existing battery and three turbines are just a few out of a plethora of other power generation utilities that are going to be replacing the decommissioned power station.
These batteries are being integrated into the South West Interconnected System (SWIS). Including these batteries the SWIS is at 35% renewable power generation.

This is only phase one of a plan where by 2050 the government wants this system to produce a net 0 in carbon emissions.
The explosion that caused all this disturbance is not due to end soon. While there may not be any more explosions the deconstruction isn’t meant to finish until the end of 2027.

Even then disturbances won’t stop as these new renewable power generation and storage facilities will be getting built for the foreseeable future.
