For 12 years over 30 million players have been battling the forces of darkness.
From the warrior-race known as ‘The Cabal’, the ravenous Hive and the Time-travelling automatons: ‘The Vex’.

‘Destiny 2′ has had 10 major content expansions, each adding new story arcs, enemies to fight, locations to explore and new superpowers to master. 
And now, Bungie is planning to snuff out the light…

‘As our focus turns towards a new beginning for Bungie, we will begin work incubating our next games. To that end, on June 9, 2026, we will release the final live-service content update for Destiny 2 to begin that new journey as a studio.’

So what does ‘Final Live-service Update’ mean?

The Monument Of Triumph!

This update, is Bungie’s last love letter to every player across all areas of the game.
From some final story beats to wrap up some characters’ lore, to a much requested update on the menu UI.
There’s a lot to cover but here are some highlights. 

New Abilities

Many of the classes are receiving fresh abilities.
For example, Solar Hunters will receive an awesome new enhancement to their dodge ability called ‘Crackshot’;
Allowing you to fire off three scorching shots from your golden gun at enemies in your line of sight when you dodge.

Or for Void Warlocks, you gain a new melee ability; ‘Soul Siphon’, where hitting an enemy allows you to siphon Health and Overshield from them.   

Exotic Items Rebalanced 

Exotic Items are the pinnacle of a Guardian’s armoury.
However, many older exotic items are receiving some much-needed changes to bring them in line with the newer gear.
From increasing base stat numbers, to adding new functionality for some of their bespoke & exotic perks.
The best part is…
This rebalance is retroactive and will be applied to all your exotic gear! So there’ll be no need to grind endlessly for updated items.

Commemorative Items

There will be tons of earnable cosmetics from previous years making a return for the Monument of Triumph.
Such as: armour colours, weapon & helmet ornaments, and even an exclusive player banner for fans that have been there since Destiny’s first years.

Conclusion

The Monument of Triumph launches on the 9th of June, 2026.
Even since its announcement, many players and content creators have shared in the nostalgic sadness that there will be No future content, No new sub-classes, No new weapons, and No new raids to complete.

Nearly 300,000 people have taken to change.org and signed a petition to have Sony Entertainment re-purchase the rights to Destiny and create a third installment to the franchise.
But this is all wishful thinking.

I personally will miss the Destiny franchise.
I started playing in September 2015, during an expansion called ‘The Taken King‘.
My main class, was the Titan.
I remember being on the edge of my seat as I watched My Titan burn away enemies with the newly released Sunbreaker, super ability.

I hope there’ll be a Destiny 3 but we’ll just have to wait and see.
