007 First Light

From the creators of the hitman series, IO Interactive have come out with a new game to the James bond franchise. 007 first light. This iteration is a younger take on Ian Fleming’s Bond even predating the 00 in his 007 epithet.

Critics claim that First Light is just a Hitman game reskinned to have James Bond as the protagonist. Visually I can agree with that as First Light and Hitman 3 share a striking resemblance.

The developers refer to stories that are better told through the medium of games. In First Light there is a choice on how you want to be James Bond. You can be the suave smooth talker that he’s known as in the movies, or you can do things your own way as a rough confrontational fighter, The choice is yours.

There are very high hopes for First Light as they want it to rival the currently recognised best Bond game, Golden Eye.

From the get go there was already negligence with distribution with physical vendors around the US selling the game days before the release date. Not much came of this due to day one patches preventing the game from being played.

From actual gameplay the relation between Hitman and First Light presents a real difference. With First Light being a much more story driven game. IO productions made sure this was not a reskinned Hitman but “its own beast”.

They double down with this in the combat feeling “like batman the arkham night” due to the tie in of gadgets and weapons

The game has broken its rather mediocre expectations of being a reskinned hitman where it has been fully realised as something independent and even getting praise as the finest Bond game since Golden Eye.

In the scope of James Bond games I would consider this a major success in passing 3 million copies sold in only 2 weeks.

So calling this the best bond game since Golden Eye isn’t too far fetched.
