Voices of The Void is a delightful breath of fresh air.
First beginning it’s development in Early 2022, it has seen consistent updates throughout the 3 years of its development; with the latest update being in December of last year.

Dr. Kel (‘The Canary’)

Voices of The Void (or VoTV) takes place in Dunkeltaler Forrest, Sweden.
You play as Junior Researcher & Facility Caretaker, Dr.Kel.

Your Job is to take care of Alpha Facility and The Satellite Arrays of The Dunkeltaler Site, collect 3 Daily Hashcodes from the Arrays, and to receive Signals from Space using the Arrays. There is more to it, namely the various Spooky Events, but we’ll get to those delightful details later.

Although it may sound like a Source Game in the vein of Half Life 2, Garry’s Mod, TF2 & Left for Dead, VoTV has been created entirely in Unreal Engine. It recreates the feel and sound of a Source Game with what must have been Painful dedication.

Whilst the game has plenty of Jank because of this, It is most certainly part of it’s Charm. Which is something that it has in spades.

The game is both Hilarious, Haunting and Peaceful.

When you first arrive at Alpha Facility, it is a mess.
There is Filth on the Walls, Piles of Detritus, Pieces of Trash everywhere and a general sense of ‘How did you even manage to get that on the ceiling, much less stick to it’ with the place.

You can find a Mannequin shoved into the Dirty Shower, or that The Cellar is filled with supply boxes. So many of them that it is hard to navigate.
Just like The Main Hallway, which feels like navigating through a narrow chasm of piled trash and detritus. On your venture through this Heaving Heap, you might find one of the several pin-codes to doors, written down and stuck haphazardly to grubby walls.
Finally reaching an exit from this Damnitable Mess, you enter The Garage.
The Garage, is actually kind of tidy considering the state of the building. I mean, have you ever seen a clear garage?
While you’re there, pick up a tool-box, wrench & screw driver, because; The Oven is broken,
The Kitchen Sink is broken, and so is the The Hot Water.
On your way back, you might take a brief respite in the Signal or Server Room.
Be careful though, There is a Molotov in one of the Air Vents, just waiting to fall down onto your little beanie wearing head. There is also a Chicken Burger sitting on top of the delicate Servers in the server room.
So, you spend the first day & night cleaning and carefully repairing things. You pick up the rubbish, clean the walls & floor; you put the Detritus in Rubbish Bags, and you get to know the base. You learn it’s intricacies, but not it’s secrets.

You get several Emails, introducing you to the researchers of a nearby facility and Dr.Bao, your Supervisor that everyone hates and thinks is a Stiff.
He assigns you your first tasks. He will never ask more than you can do.
Each day Dr.Bao will ask for 2 Things: 3 Hashcodes and a Number of Signals. You may also feel free to include things like Maintenance Reports, or Incident Reports. (no-one will ever respond)
From your first day you become familiar with the Dunkeltaler Site. You ride your ATV to visit the Satellite Arrays and collect Hash Codes from them onto a piece of paper.
Once you hand in your Signals and Hash Codes, the Main Research Facility will send you ‘Points’ which you can use in the in-game shop on your PC.
This is the most Basic gameplay loop of Voices Of The Void.
It is Boring.
In a Good Way.

You see, the real Draw of Voices of The Void is not the basic gameplay Loop;
It is the Events.
The Events in VoTV are strange and without explanation.
For example, on the night of Day 4 the Breaker in the cellar of Alpha Facility will shut off.
The power has not gone out.
The Transformers have not malfunctioned.
Something has flipped all of the breakers in the cellar.
This never happens again.
At some point, all of the many Mannequins around Alpha will disappear and reappear by the Satellite Array: Uniform.
Eventually, the Mannequins leave their stands and start following you. Only when you’re not looking of course.
There’s a Well deep in the woods, past Transformer 0. At the bottom of it is a Femur, a Spine, an Arm Bone, and a Hook Rope.
Food can go missing from your fridge. (Mostly the shrimp)
Knocking sounds can be heard from the vents in Alpha.
At 3AM another Camera is added to the camera system. It shows an elevator bathed in red. The door to this elevator is boarded shut behind a door locked without a pass-code, and another door that needs a key-card to enter.

3AM Elevator Camera

There is a Locked Room in the Cellar.
The door has a folding chair leaned up against it. It is seemingly Bolted and Welded Shut.
There is a small glass window that lets you look inside. Several racks of meat hang within.
They keep disappearing. Something is eating them.
Theses are only a handful of the many, many events that can occur in the game.
Another fun one is the time that something CENSORED started, capital S, Stalking me around the Facility. When I went to smash it’s Black Squared Existence inwards like an empty bowl, my game crashed.
I have not seen it since, I live in constant terror. 🙂

Thanks to these events, the game fosters a very… Healthy? Sense of paranoia.
You can also get some Funky Event Signals too.
Here’s a small list of some:

  • A Black Hole that plays Music.
  • ‘Oh wowzers that’s an Album Cover’
  • Spike
  • ‘Oh Hey It’s Earth!’
  • 2 Spikes
  • ‘OH DEAR GOD IT’S LOOKING AT ME’
  • Fard.
Example of Signal: ‘Fard’

These are all signals that can be found in the game an listened to.
Some of them are horrifying. Some of them are Fart Noises.
Many of them are just of Planets, Stars and Nothing Much At All.
One of the last features of Voice of The Void is it’s customisability.
In the Game’s Shop, you can purchase Custom Item decorations, alongside the pre-made decorations.
These are Posters, Photo Frames, Rugs, Radios, and even TV’s.
With these, you can very easily insert custom assets into the game.
Do you want to hang a poster of the Hit 1984 American science-fiction action film directed by James Cameron, ‘The Terminator’ in your living quarters?
WELL YOU CAN!
All you have to do, is download a PNG in a 1:1 ratio, or convert it into that file type via Microsoft paint, then open the pathway: ‘%LOCALAPPDATA%\VotV\Assets’ and put it into the Posters File!
The next time you launch the game, you can pick up a Custom Poster and put a poster for ‘The Terminator’ up onto your living quarter’s walls in-game.
You can also add Music to the Radio, and Video’s to the TV’s!
I actually know a Guy with 300 Gigs of movies he put onto one of the TV’s for a lark.
There are also many pre-made assets, like Plushies.
Such as one that’s called ‘cool funy 7 hours (real) (no fake)’ which references the time a Streamer named Jollywangcore took 7 Hours to beat the Tutorial.
No, I am not kidding.
Yes, I do have this plush in my game.

If this little review has got you interested in Voices of The Void and you want to play it, you can find it on Itch.IO, it’s completely free and just got updated last December.
Also, 4 Pieces of Advice:

  1. Buy a Frame, CPUs and make a Cooler as soon as you can. It will make you infinite money for just existing.
  2. The is a Hollow Log sticking out of The River near The Lake, there is a barrel filled with 50 MREs inside it. Take them and sell them via an Item Box for about 800 Points.
  3. Turn on ‘The Funny Setting’ in the Settings Menu, and type ‘Maxwell’ into the Console. Then find The Boi™.
  4. Look up as little as possible when You play the game.

Voices of The Void is a fantastic game, all the more because it is Free.
It is Charming, It is Spooky, and it is perfect for those who love to Explore.
In this review I have kept much from You.
I have hidden many secrets and told many a foreshadowing. I beg of you, do not look up any further information on this game if possible. Only do so if you’re stuck or heard of something distantly and desperately want to know more.
This game is highly entertaining and well worth any time spent waiting for it to get started.
