Top 10 Sporting Events WA has hosted
By Jevan Collins
For all the time I’ve been alive, WA has hosted some great sporting spectacles but nothing as big as yesterday’s announcement of the 2021 AFL grand final in Perth and I’m going to take you through a top 10 of the best sporting events WA has hosted over the year.
10. 1962 Commonwealth Games in Perth
In 1962 Perth had the honor of being the second city in Australia to host the commonwealth games and what a spectacle it was from 22 November to 1st December all the commonwealth countries descended on Perth and most of the venues from those games are still use today or heritage listed.
9. First AFL final in WA West Coast Vs Hawthorn
In 1991 the first-ever AFL final was played outside of Victoria between West Coast and Hawthorn at Subiaco Oval, The Eagles finished first and earned the right to host a finals game in Perth after coming first, The Eagles lost that game 101 to 124 in front of 44,142 WA footy fans.
8. 2000 Demolition Derby Fremantle Vs West Coast
This was probably the most intense western derby of all time with suspension and fines galore as both teams couldn’t make finals and the Eagles had won the derby earlier in the year by 117 points a derby record so both teams took it out on each other with Fremantle winning the game by a solitary point.
7. First-Ever Derby 1995 West Coast Vs Fremantle
This was a historic day in WA sport the first-ever western derby between the Eagles and the dockers, the dockers were the new boys while the Eagles were the raining premiers after winning the flag in 1994 and the Eagles flexed their muscles against little brother by smashing the dockers by 85 points.
6. BBL 3 Grand Final Perth Scorchers Vs Hobart Hurricanes
This was the scorchers third attempt at winning their maiden BBL title after losing the first two to Sydney and Brisbane, all the stars aligned as the marsh brothers put on a big partnership in the first innings to score 192, and then the bowlers went to work to restrict Hobart to 152 to claim their maiden BBL title.
5. 2003 NSL Grand Final Perth Glory Vs Olympic Sharks
This was a massive day in the history of Perth Glory after losing the 2000 NSL grand final after being 3-0 up at half- time and losing on penalties to the Wollongong wolves, 2003 was their redemption year as they beat Olympic sharks 2-0 to claim there first NSL title and they then went on to win the last NSL title in 2004 beating Parramatta power on golden goals
4. 2013 Preliminary Final Fremantle Vs Sydney
What a year 2013 year was for Fremantle as they made the finals and beat Geelong down in Geelong in the qualifying final and qualified for their first-ever home preliminary final against Sydney and in front of 43,249 Freo fans at Patterson Stadium, Fremantle qualified for their first-ever AFL Grand Final against Hawthorn
3. 2010 NBL Grand Final game 3
This Wildcats championship meant a lot to the people of Perth after not winning a championship for 10 years but making the playoffs every time in that run and coming so close in the earlier 2000’s only coming unstuck to a dominant Sydney Kings team, so in the 2010 Grand Final the wildcats meet the Wollongong Hawks in the grand final and going into game 3 the series was level at 1 apiece but the Wildcats triumph with a 22 point win of Wollongong to claim their 5th NBL title.
2. 2018/ 19 A-League Grand Final
This was Perth Glory second shot at winning their maiden A-League title after losing in the 2012 grand finale to Brisbane, this was the first A-League grand final in the west after Perth won the right to host after winning the premiers plate for finishing top of the ladder and this time, they would face Sydney FC the Glory would go down on penalties, but it was an amazing game for WA.
- 2021 AFL Grand Final
Arguably the biggest sporting event WA has ever held and in a footy loving state in WA if the MCG was unable to host the grand final in 2021 Optus Stadium was always the backup plan for the biggest game in the AFL was coming to the west.
