Optus as Plan B for Grand Final
By Jevan Collins
The AFL announced yesterday Optus Stadium as the backup plan for this year’s AFL Grand Final if the MCG is unable to host the game due to Victoria’s rising Covid numbers.
If Perth was to host the grand final this year it would be the second straight year the big dance would be played somewhere other than the MCG after last year grand final was played at the GABBA, The AFL in 2018 singed a contract with the MCG to have the grand final at the venue until 2057.
It has been rumored for months that the Grand final would be played in WA after Victoria went into their 5th and 6th lockdowns in the past 2 years and in a better sign for WA hopes of having the Grand Final was that after the winners of this week’s qualifying final will fly to Perth if they win and a pre-grand final bye will be arranged to meet the 7 days quarantine in WA.
