Essendon’s Finals Drought Continues
By Jevan Collins
It’s been 6204 days since Essendon has won a final which calculates to the elimination final in 2004 against Melbourne and yesterday at Utas Stadium against the Bulldogs was the best chance they had of breaking their hoodoo.
But what record Essendon did break was the 4.11.36 was the lowest Essendon score since 1908 as well as break the record of the first team to go goalless in the second half of a final in 44,899 days. Going into the game the Bombers had all the momentum coming off 3 straight wins which one was to the Bulldogs and the dogs coming off 3 straight losses and slipping from 1st to 5th in a matter of a week.
It was also the first time the Bulldogs and Bombers had met in a final since 1963, the game started well for the Bombers kicking the first goal from former Bulldog Jake Stringer had the quarter-time margin at 3 and goals from stringer, Darcy Parish who had a sensational second quarter and Devon Smith rounded out the goal scoring for the Dons.
It’s going to be a long Pre- Season at Essendon heading in 2022 and there going to have to wait another 365 days to break their finals hoodoo and the fact is there one of the oldest clubs going around and they and Gold Coast are the only teams not to win a final since 2004, but Essendon is also waiting to win there first final without Kevin Sheedy since 1968.
