Bol Wins Aussie Hearts
Even though Peter Bol didn’t win gold in the 800m final at Tokyo 2020 he still won over the nation with his 4th place finish. Bol was the first Australian in an 800m final for the first time in 53 yrs.
Going into the race Bol had won his heat 3 days earlier and took that form into the final. With the whole nation and the Bol family watching him from their home in Perth, Bol came out swinging from the get-go to lead the majority of the race but as the last 100m approached he was overtaken. He managed to hang on to become the 4th best middle-distance runner in the world.
Bol is an amazing success story. After immigrating from Sudan when he was 8 to Queensland and then to Western Australia, he took up the 800m at the age of 16 after a suggestion from his teacher.
When the games are done and dusted, Peter Bol will go down as an Aussie icon who won the heart of a nation through his amazing athleticism.
