Death of Stalin is a Coup

Screen Shot 2018-03-20 at 12.46.10 PMLast Saturday patrons of the Luna Leederville we’re treated to an early screening of “The Death of Stalin”.

The 2017 film is a political satire comedy filmed and co-written by Armando Lannucci. The film manages to remain accurate to the historical figures portrayed while satirising some of the absurdities and contradictions in both the communist party and a
totalitarian state. There is the wicked word play and political manoeuvring of such figures as Nikita Khrushev and Lavrentiy Beria paired with the inherent absurdity of the gulag and torture and imprisonment of political enemies makes for an interesting an engaging twist when you are confronted with the realities on implementing such draconian methods.

It is not a silly slap slip of such events for cheap laughs, but a reflection of how humans cope and can be made to live within such a world. My own bias going into the film was that this was going to be a mediocre comedy from the trailer alone. It happens to be one of those instances where I could not be happier to be wrong. If I could sum it up in one succinct phrase I would say “After the first screening this has become one of my favourite films”

As the film goes threw the real events and accounts of the death of leader of the soviet union Josef Stalin the subsequent jockeying for power and advantage is a take on a politics and history that is few and far between. I found myself laughing, watching intently, curious, tense and reflective.

The film is available for regular screening’s in Australia March 29th at the Luna Leederville and participating cinemas.

Arrow! Whens the last episode you saw? back when the show was popping in season 3? same! Did you know there are 3 more seasons now? :: MOVIE REVIEW :: Justice League

Following the release of DC Films’ #JusticeLeague, Marcel forced Christian & Kiki into the studio to talk about the hype. The review is linked below:

The review from christian was based around his childhood journey growing up with the comics and Kiara’s general knowledge about the subject. Marcel’s obviously limited experience in the comic book side of the film was clear and didn’t need much to be convinced to see it.
