DFES needs YOUth
With the climate continuously changing and natural disasters becoming more frequent, DFES need more support. Over the weekend, 16 individuals and groups were presented awards for their bravery and sacrifice for communities across Western Australia. Two of these people were Jay Dwyer (18) and James Cotter
Jay is a part of the Quinns Rocks Bushfire Brigade and said to radio journalists that there’s always room for more young people to join the force.
“There’s a good few around (youth), but there’s never enough. The more, the merrier. Anyone who’s interested, come on and give it a try”
Earlier this year Cyclone Seroja hit Kalbarri and WA’s coast leaving the town devastated. Without large numbers, people like James Cotter would be left alone to fight a continuous battle. Currently, DFES is appealing to Perth youth to get them enlisted to join the emergency services as volunteers.
Volunteers like James and Jay say the experience is invaluable and teaches them necessary life skills, as well as creates friendships that will last forever. You can express your interest at a local bushfire brigade or by visiting www.dfes.vol.org.au
Every extra body keeps WA that bit safer.
