Australian youth can mean a lot of things. Golden Gaytimes after a netball game on a Saturday morning. Boogie boarding at the beach when you stay down at the coast over the weekend. It could mean Saturday Disney in your PJs whilst eating Wheat Bix. Or, it could’ve meant shows like Blue Water High or Dance Academy.
BOOM Radio was lucky enough to score some tickets to review Dance Academy at the advanced screening at Event Cinemas in Innaloo Wednesday night. The night started with a flash mob from the dance school The Green Room Entertainment – it was met with awes and cheers and really got us in the mood for an Aussie dance movie.
There’s something raw and exciting about seeing Australians and Australia on the big screen, in a media industry saturated with Hollywood content. Dance Academy was a nostalgic breath of fresh air. A movie for those who had seen the series – we saw an epilogue of sorts of the series.
Moments of joy and nods to the series were intermittently interrupted by a refreshing representation of the trauma that comes along with major injuries. Overall, if you’ve seen the series, you’ll appreciate the movie.
