RIP Prince (1958 – 2016)

In the early hours of today, Friday April 22nd (Australian Time), the sky rained Purple, we heard the sound of Doves crying, and we said goodbye to one of the most talented individuals that we’ve been lucky enough to witness.

We said goodbye to Prince.

Prince Rogers Nelson was born on June 7th 1958 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

In the year 1976 at the age of 17, Prince produced his own recorded demo, with which he went searching for a record label to sign him. Unfortunately at that time he was unable to secure a recording contract. However not long after, with the help of producer Chris Moon and Minneapolis businessman Owen Husney, another demo was made, this time attracting the interest of many record companies, including Warner Bros. Records, A&M Records and Columbia Records. Prince chose to sign with Warner Bros.

Prince’s first album ‘For You’ was released on April 7 1978. Showing just how talented he was at his age, it was revealed that he had in fact produced, arranged, composed and played all 27 instruments on the recording. However the best was yet to come for the boy from Minnesota.

It wasn’t until 1984 that Prince had his first major number 1 hit. This came in the form of his song ‘When Doves Cry’ which went on to hit the number 1 spot on global charts. He then backed it up with the song ‘Let’s Go Crazy’ also going on to top the charts. These songs and another classic which needs no introduction all came from his 6th studio album ‘Purple Rain’ which went on to sell over 13 million copies and spent 24 consecutive weeks in the number 1 spot on the US Billboard 200 chart.

Prince’s final number 1 song came in 1994 called ‘The Most Beautiful Girl in the World’ off his 17th studio album ‘The Gold Experience’. But Prince’s songs have long stayed on the charts right across the world, and his music being the very reason for some of our popular singers of today, starting their careers, such as Justin Timberlake. This is only part of what makes the legacy he leaves behind so substantial.

The loss of this musical genius and humble human being is being felt worldwide, with people from all walks of life sharing their grief, and coming together in different corners of the world, some in spirit, and some in large groups singing out aloud some of the incredible work that we witnessed be produced by the man himself.

Stars have taken to Social Media to express their condolences.

So it is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of a true music genius and great soul. But the legend of Prince will live on for many generations to come, and we can be forever grateful to have witnessed the man and be even just a small part of his incredible journey.

Rest in Peace Prince
